The iPad and AirTurn in Performance with Violinist Giora Schmidt

Giora Schmidt
When classical violinist Giora Schmidt took on the challenge of performing a major new work for solo violin - a transcription of the nefariously difficult Piano Sonata by Franz Liszt - he was faced with an interesting conundrum. How do you turn 35 pages of music in a 35 minute piece that has no break? Do you have someone sit next to you and stand up intermittently to turn the pages? Do you set up the music “accordion style” with a row of music stands? Both options seemed rather ridiculous from a visual perspective, so Giora did some digging around and came across the AirTurn BT-105, the hands-free page turning wireless pedal system that works with computers and tablets like the iPad.

In this video interview, Giora Schmidt talks about his adoption of the iPad as a digital music reader, and the AirTurn BT-105 as the perfect compliment enabling him to turn pages discreetly and hands free without disturbing his musical performance.

Video performance footage was taken from the world premiere performance at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago in September, 2011. Special acknowledgment to composer and pianist Noam Sivan for his work in transcribing the Liszt Piano Sonata in B minor for solo violin.
